NJ Colonials Embraced ADM Early http://www.njcolonials.com/boys-hockey/nj-colonials-embraced-adm-early/ http://www.njcolonials.com/boys-hockey/nj-colonials-embraced-adm-early/#comments Fri, 08 Aug 2014 13:40:09 +0000 dmcmenamy http://www.njcolonials.com/?p=2549

07/29/2014, 4:00pm EDT

By Mike Scandura – Special to USAHockey.com
Looking back, the New Jersey Colonials were ahead of the curve when it came to adopting the principles of USA Hockey’s American Development Model.

“We’ve been doing it for over 12 years,” said Colonials Director of Boys’ Hockey Noel Rubin. “We started using the principles of what became the ADM before USA Hockey officially implemented it.

“I’m really proud of the program. It all stems back to the success we’ve had with the mite ADM program. It’s really helped us develop these kids.”

Last season, the Colonials suited up eight Tier I teams, ranging from squirt minor through midget, plus 14 Tier II teams ranging from peewee AA through midget AA. If you’re counting, that’s a total of 22 teams encompassing approximately 425 boys.

“We really have grown,” Rubin said. “My first year was the 2002-03 season and we had three Tier I teams. We’ve more than doubled in size since then.

“Due in part to the ADM, we’ve been able to grow this program. With the ADM, there are more kids on the ice plus more skill development. We put coaches at stations and the groups are small. We communicate better.”

The Colonials utilize four venues — Mennen Arena in Morristown, Bridgewater Sports Arena, Clary Anderson Arena in Montclair and Twin Oaks Ice Arena in Morristown — for a combined seven sheets of ice.

“It’s an arduous task,” Rubin said of the scheduling logistics. “This time of the year it’s hectic with our conditioning clinics, new players calling about next year and conducting interviews with coaches. Everything is rolling and it’s tough to keep in touch with the number of people who have questions.”

Several people come together to make it all work.

“We have a good administrator in Kathy Branchina, a good master scheduler in Stephanie Eick and our COO Dede McMenamy,” Rubin said. “Plus we have a great volunteer board of directors. They run a lot of the tryouts plus our 3-on-3 tournaments, our conditioning clinics and our in-season clinics.”

The ability of the Colonials to develop players is underscored by the fact that numerous boys have gone on to play high school hockey for Morristown, Morristown-Beard, Morris Knolls and Delbarton over the years.

“This year there were 16 or 17 Colonials who played for Delbarton High and 40 to 50 percent who played for Beard and Delbarton,” Rubin said. “It’s prestigious to play for Delbarton, who lost to Morristown Beard in the

state semifinals. They’re the top two high school teams in the state.”

While several Colonial alumni have gone on to play college hockey, the one alumnus who jumps off the proverbial page is Kenny Agostino. The longtime Yale standout played his senior season with the Bulldogs last year before joining the Calgary Flames late in the National Hockey League season. In 2013, he helped Yale win the NCAA Division I national championship.

“I think Kenny is the perfect example of the prototypical Colonial,” Rubin said. “His father never played hockey, but he got Kenny into our mite C program, which is our ADM program. He played four years of mite, two years of squirt, two years of bantam and three years of midget.

“There’s no question he comes from a great family. I had the privilege of coaching him for four years. He’s a great kid who worked very hard over the years to get to where he is.”

Last season, Colonials teams played in five of the eight AYHL championship games.

“It was a great year for us,” Rubin said. “Three of our four teams won and two placed second.”

In addition, the peewee B team won gold at the March Classic held at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough, Mass., while Team Squirt Lucey also won gold in the squirt bracket of the same tournament. And the 19-and-Under Tier I team annexed the championship of the Pittsburgh Elite Thanksgiving Tournament.

Turn back the clock to 2011 and Rubin’s peewee team won the national championship.

“In 2012, we almost won again, which would have given us back-to-back titles,” he said. “It didn’t start that way, but the last six or seven years we’ve had successful teams.

“We’ve been able to develop guys to play college hockey and, hopefully, they’ll go further.”

At the end of the day, though, the Colonials focus on more than just winning championships.

“We make sure that sportsmanship is very important and that we’re classy whether we win or lose,” Rubin said. “The kids know when they come to play for the Colonials we expect nothing but good behavior as well as class and respect whenever they step on the ice.”

2014 Ray Murray/Donna Guariglia Achievement Award Winners http://www.njcolonials.com/uncategorized/2014-ray-murraydonna-guariglia-achievement-award-winners/ http://www.njcolonials.com/uncategorized/2014-ray-murraydonna-guariglia-achievement-award-winners/#comments Mon, 30 Jun 2014 18:20:54 +0000 dmcmenamy http://www.njcolonials.com/?p=2515 RAY MURRAY/DONNA GUARIGLIA ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNERS

Each year, our coaches are asked to select one player, from their team, for the “Ray Murray or Donna Guariglia Achievement Award.” This is a player that best exemplifies the attributes espoused by our distinguished predecessors, Ray Murray and Donna Guariglia. The chosen player may not be the individual that scores the most goals, but rather one who leads the team in other ways.

Our eponymous awards were named after two former New Jersey Colonial presidents, Ray Murray and Donna Guariglia.  Both individuals were important driving forces in the creation of what is now The New Jersey Colonials Travel Hockey Association.

Ray Murray was one of the founding members of the New Jersey Colonials and was a giant in Morris County Hockey, having started the Morris County Colonials recreational team, eventually helping to create our travel club.  As a former coach, he embodied the true essence of sportsmanship for the game of hockey.

Donna Guariglia was the driving force who brought Girls/Women’s hockey to the New Jersey Colonials.  Donna grew up in a hockey family, with brothers who excelled at the sport.  She eventually married a hockey player and coach (Coach Dave!), and had 2 sons who played the sport!  Donna eventually joined a women’s team and played the sport herself.

To this day, Donna is one of the Atlantic District’s greatest proponents of girl’s hockey. Currently, Donna is the President of MAWHA and the USA Hockey Section Director for Girls’/ Women’s Hockey.  Donna remains a strong advocate for Girls’/Women’s hockey throughout the United States. Donna was recently selected to serve on USA Hockey’s Executive Board.

The awardees attributes, which we hope all our athletes aspire to, include, but are not limited to: Strong values, hard work, determination, team spirit, good sportsmanship and self-discipline.

The boys “Ray Murray” awards were presented by individual teams, at their year end team parties.  The girls “Donna Guariglia” awards were  presented at the annual “Girl’s Gala,” on March 12, 2014 at the Grand Summit, Summit, NJ.

Congratulations to  all of of the 2014 winners!

Gould currently serves as the Atlantic Amateur Hockey Association’s representative to the girls’/women’s section of USA Hockey since 2011; and the Mid-Atlantic Women’s Hockey Association as director and executive board member since 2006.

Among his responsibilities is the growth and development of female hockey in the AAHA;  managing its Girls’ Development Camp and the National Player Development Camp selection process;  and the management and implementation of USA Hockey’s American Development Model for girls across the district.  As a section representation, Don provides support for the AAHA and input to USA Hockey at the national level.

For the past eight seasons, Gould has held the position as coach/assistant director of girls’ hockey for the New Jersey Colonials.  His head coaching experience includes levels from 8U developmental to 19UTI, eight consecutive years as a head coach at 14U TI classification, eight consecutive MAWHA championships, nine consecutive AAHA Championships and nine consecutive USAH National Championship bids.  The program has helped over 75 student/athletes go on to realize their goal of playing collegiate hockey in the ACHA and NCAA at DI and DIII levels.

He served the 2005-06 season with the Bridgewater (NJ) Bears girls’ team.  In 2003-04, Gould was president of the San Jose (CA) Junior Sharks girls’ team.  He worked five seasons, 1997-2002, as a National Hockey League/New Jersey Devils off-ice official, working home game at the Meadowlands.  Gould also spent six years, 1996-2002 as a youth coach/volunteer with the Bears.

Originally from Buffalo, NY, Don grew up playing on the ponds and ice rinks of upstate New York.  He and his wife, Annie Lynch, raised four children, and have been involved in Garden State youth hockey since 1996.

The programs will begin in late September/early October and run through late February/early March.  There will be two sessions per week, with the days to be determined.  As an example, the boy’s program has been held on Sunday afternoons and Thursday early evening, while the girl’s programs have been on Mondays and Wednesdays, early evening.  Tuition includes a colored jersey and a pair of hockey socks. Players must provide their own hockey gear, which includes: hockey skates, helmet (HECC approved), shoulder & elbow pads and shin guards, mouth guard, gloves, hockey pants or girdle with shell and a stick. You provide the gear, we’ll provide the fun!
