SQUIRT AAA MINOR AYHL LEAGUE & PLAYOFF CHAMPIONS

The NJ Colonials Squirt Minor Ice Hockey team capped off a spectacular season by winning the AYHL Playoff Championshipthe weekend of February 29 – March 2 with 5 wins and no losses. The Colonials won their first two games defeating the Philadelphia Little Flyers (7-2) and the N.J. Rockets (6-1). In the third game, the Colonials battled back from a 3-goal deficit, to beatSuffolk PAL 5 to 4. In the semi-finals, the Colonials took on the Long Island Gulls and won 9 to 3. For the final nail-biter, the Colonials yet again met Suffolk PAL. After a scoreless first period, PAL put the first goal in the net. The lead see-sawed back and forth, with PAL in the lead by a goal at the end of the second period. The play intensified in the third period, which remained scoreless until 13:08 when the Colonials tied the game. With about a minute left in the game the Colonials scored to win the game.

With the final win, the team achieved a season record of 54 and 7. Besides an outstanding league season with only 3 losses against AYHL teams, the team had a number of significant accomplishments in tournament play. The team was the first Colonials AAA team to win the Silver Sticks Regional Tournament. They did this by going 5 and 0 against some of the best 9 and 10 year old hockey players in the mid-Atlantic Region. The team went on to reach the quarterfinals of the Silver Sticks Championship in Whitby, Ontario with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss competing against outstanding teams from Canada and Michigan.

At the Bell Capital Cup in Ottawa, the team placed second to the Syracuse Stars with a record of 5 wins and 1 loss. Going into the tournament the Colonials Squirt Minor team was the 5th seed and highest ranked U.S team in their division. The team successfully overcame outstanding competitors from Rhode Island, Los Angeles and 3 of the top 4 ranked Canadian teams. Four Colonial players were in the top ten scoring leaders in the Atom Minor AAA division of thetournament. It was certainly an outstanding performance at a very prestigious tournament.

The team’s successful season was a total team effort with all skaters contributing to the team’s 396 goals, averaging more than 6 goals per game. Outstanding defense by all skaters and the team’s goalies resulted in only 142 goals against (GAA of 2.33).

  END OF AN ERA

Donna Guariglia, esteemed Colonials past President and Board Member, recently resigned her position on the New Jersey Colonials Board. With great reluctance, the Board accepted her resignation. Donna resigned for personal reasons, feeling that with new members on the Board, it was time for them to move in new directions. Donna's husband, Coach Dave Guariglia, also tendered his resignation.

Donna and Dave have spent countless hours in their advocacy of youth hockey programs. Donna will continue in her role as President of the Mid Atlantic Women’s Hockey Association, coordinating that organization’s roll in the 2008 Women’s Nationals to be held at Ice Line Arena, West Chester, PA in March 2008.

Donna served on the Colonials Board for 12 years, starting when her sons Pete and Dan both played on Colonials Teams. Donna’s strong hand and guidance led the Colonials to become one of the premier youth hockey organizations, not only within the Mid Atlantic District but throughout all of USA Hockey. Donna was also responsible for creating the Women’s Program at the Colonials and sponsors the "Guariglia Award" given to a deserving Senior girl who has participated in the Colonial Women's Program.

Dave, a long time coach, is fondly remembered by player and parent alike, as a guy who always cared about his players, worked hard to help a player increase his skills, but never forgot that hockey was supposed to be fun.

Both Guariglias will be deeply missed!

SQUIRT MINOR TEAM WINS SILVER STICKS QUALIFIER

The NJ Colonials Squirt Minor Ice Hockey team made history at the Silver Sticks Regional Tournament in Ashburn, VA over Columbus Day weekend by being the first Colonial AAA team to ever win at this level. They did this by going 5 and 0 against some of the best 9 and 10 year old hockey players in the mid-Atlantic Region.

The Colonials easily won their first two games defeating the Philadelphia Junior Flyers (8-2) and the N.J. Junior Devils (7-0). Then, the Colonials met some stiff competition from teams from Long Island and Westchester. On Saturday afternoon, the Colonials took on the always tough Long Island Gulls in a hard fought battle that ended with a 6-3 win for the Colonials. In Sunday’s semi-final round, the Colonials went up against the formidable Westchester Express. It was a fast paced and very physical game. The Colonials played relentless defense and aggressively attacked the net. As this hard fought battle came to an end the Colonials scored on an empty net to clinch the 6-3 win.

For the final nail-biter on Monday, the Colonials met a very strong Suffolk PAL team. The Colonials scored first but PAL quickly tied it and went ahead after scoring on a penalty shot. The Colonials kept battling and finally tied the scored in the third period. At the end of regulation, the score was tied 2-2 resulting in a five minute four on four sudden death overtime. The puck was dropped to start the OT and the Colonials drove to the net scoring just 30 seconds later, giving the Colonials a 3-2 OT win!!

A total team effort gave the Colonials the win they have been working toward for two years. While all skaters helped the team score 30 goals, outstanding defense and goaltending resulted in the team giving up only 10 goals in the tournament. This win allows the team to take on select teams from the U.S. and Canada in the Silver Sticks AAA Minor finals in Whitby, Ontario over Thanksgiving weekend.

The top sixteen teams in North America will battle to see who the new Silver Sticks Champion will be!

  LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON

Alex will be following in the skates and footsteps of his dad, Coach Randy Velischek, who attended Providence College from 1979 to 1983. Randy went on to play in the NHL for the North Stars, Devils and Nordiques. Congratulations to Alex! Here's to a very bright college hockey career!

  SPRING HOCKEY, COLONIALS STYLE!

Winter hockey will soon come to a close, but don't let your skates or skills get rusty! Why not come out for our Spring hockey league, "COLONIALS CUP V"!? We will field teams from Squirt through Midget/Varsity, providing challenging games that will help improve a player's abilities.

Our very popular Mite Nite is back and is a great way to introduce the newest players to the world of hockey, with small ice games for small players and eventually graduating them to full ice play.

Girls can get in on the action, too, with our GIRL'S CLINICS, taught by our own Shelley Looney, New Jersey Colonials Women's Hockey Director and Olympic Gold medalist. She will be joined by her very competent coaching staff in teaching the basics AND the finer skills of hockey to both inexperienced and very experienced players. There will be two levels of Girl's clinics--10U/12U and 14/16/19U.

So, bring your winter team for a Spring hockey fling or get your friends together to play! Teams must have a minimum of 15 players with 20 players at the max. Limited individual player spots will be available and players will be placed, at the Hockey Director's discretion, according to skill level. All teams will need a manager to contact. We provide the jerseys! Don't forget, each player must complete an Individual Registration form, even if you are playing on a team.

Spring Showers and May Flowers? Fahgetaboudit! We've got Ice! Come Play Hockey!

  OUR NEW LOOK!

Welcome to our "New" web site! In celebration of 35 years as a youth travel hockey club, we have had a metamorphosis! We've changed the appearance of our web site and of our players. Our uniforms still have our long recognized red, white and blue color scheme, but we've updated our look-with just a touch of retro in our lace up collars. Our player names are sewn on, giving our jersey's a highly professional look.
